Now, I do believe that artists have the right to being pretentious to a certain degree, because if they're not, then they're not artists - they're entertainers. It seems like there's supposed to be some sort of a bold artistic statement behind all this, but all I seem to be able to see is a boldly pretentious masterpiece. Antichrist, while being a beautiful, sobering meditation on grief and human suffering, is also staggeringly graphic, even by modern standards. The piles of bodies (and the ending) actually look quite cool as a part of imagery, but fail to really connect to the plot in a deeply meaningful way. His reputation as a Marmite movie-maker is entirely fair. The supposedly apocalyptic theme doesn't have much of an explanation behind it apart from some drawings, a book that is shown in a few shots and unexplained piles of bodies laying everywhere. The movie featured a grieving couple that retreated to their. The movie contains violent scenes, sadomasochism, graphic self-mutilation scenes. to do ‘it’ like real married couple despite using body doubles. The violence didn't bother me as much as what Von Trier tried to use it for, which is nothing other than a shock element to jolt some life into the dead plot. The film starred Lauren Lee Smith and Eric Balfour and it was among the most romantic movie theatre listings. which they effectively do, along with the TRITE ultra-violent subject matter. Followed are the handheld shots, which are supposed to counter the beauty and the serenity of the slow motion shots. First, the shitty panning shots with swirls of distortion remind me of J.J. Von Trier begins with the trademark slow motion shots, which look quite beautiful at first then, it all goes downhill. The cinematography is like a train wreck, as it mixes wildly beautiful shots with something that looks like it was filmed for a high school project. This is perhaps the only strong thing about this film, as the two main actors aren't playing their finest roles here. The strongest thing Von Trier has going for Antichrist is the imagery used in the film.

Tarkovsky must be rolling in his grave right now, as the almighty Lars Von Trier decided to dedicate this MASTERPIECE to him.
